This lithograph by Corneille, signed and dated 1999 and numbered 156/200, shows a lying female head next to a colorful bird. The composition is executed in bold black lines, with striking purple and red color accents against a gray background. The large eyes of the woman and the bird give the composition a lively and almost dreamy look. Women and birds are among the best-known motifs in Corneille's work and are here playfully brought together. The free lines, imaginative forms, and bright colors give the lithograph the spontaneous and expressive appearance that is so characteristic of his work. Corneille was the artist's name of Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922–2010), born in Liège and one of the leading Dutch artists associated with the CoBrA movement. Along with others including Karel Appel and Constant, he belonged to the experimental artists who after World War II sought a free and spontaneous way of making art. Corneille drew inspiration from, among other things, children's drawings, nature, people, and his many travels. Later he developed a very recognizable, colorful visual language in which especially women, birds, and celestial bodies frequently appear. In addition to paintings and drawings, he made a lot of graphics, through which his work became known to a wide audience. Edition: 156/200 Bottom right signed and dated 1999 Viewing is possible
