Crucifix - Papier-mache - 1750-1800 - Christ in papier-mâché

Ancient crucifix made of papier-mâché and polychrome terracotta. Exquisite work in devotional and artisanal papier-mâché, historically widespread in sacred folk art and in Italian specialized workshops, notable among them the Lecce papier-mâché tradition. The body of Christ is modeled in polychrome papier-mâché. This technique allowed an excellent anatomical and dramatic rendering while keeping the sculpture light. The figure is mounted on a linear dark wood cross, topped by the classic cartouche
