Datsun 240 Z Series II Coupé 1971 • 2,393 cc 6-cylinder motor • Directly suitable for rally driving • Tripmeter • Hella driving lights • Roll cage • Cobra bucket seats • Well maintained (invoices available) HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION: With the Z-series, Datsun introduced an iconic car to the market. A fast and nimble car with a delightful six-cylinder engine, but also a comfortable GT. It is no coincidence that the example we offer has been upgraded and fitted for rally driving and/or long trips. This car is a true milage-eater. Notable additions include a rally tripmeter, bucket seats, roll cage, Hella driving lights, and a safety switch. This example with type code HLS30 was produced in August 1971 and was newly delivered in the United States. The chassis number is 40190, which means this is a Series II. In 2011 the car was imported from the sunny climate of California to the Netherlands. The car is well maintained, with a lot of documentation available. Due to its age, the car is exempt from road tax and no longer requires an APK (MOT). EXTERIOR: The paintwork is superb in a warm orange shade: New Sight Orange (color code 918). The sporty aluminum 15-inch rims are fitted with Vredestein tires all around, which are still in good condition. Visually the car is in a fairly original state, with signs of use appropriate to the car’s age. Furthermore, it has a rigid chassis. The lighting and windows are in good condition. The chromework is largely original and the rubber seals have partly been renewed. At the front, Hella driving lights have been mounted, giving a tougher appearance. What distinguishes Series II most from Series I are the Z logos behind the side windows (instead of a 240Z logo). Larger bumpers have also been applied. A true rally car, ready for new adventures! INTERIOR: The interior is clearly oriented towards driving rather than luxury: a functional dashboard with round gauges in a deep bucket, less chrome than early Series 1 and more plastic trim, sturdier and somewhat more modern seats, and a somewhat more practical layout of switches and controls. The steering wheel and gear lever are made of wood. The interior features heating and various updates, including a safety switch, hydraulic handbrake, Belmog Classic rally tripmeter, Cobra bucket seats, roll cage (Safety Devices) and USB and 12V ports. The headlining is beautifully finished with nice stitching. The luggage space features a fire extinguisher and spare wheel, neatly covered under the upholstery. The interior shows signs of use appropriate to the car’s age. TECHNICAL: Driving the car is a joy: combined with the raw, rugged engine sound, the car not only sounds sporty but also delivers performance by 1970s standards that is impressive. Around 8 seconds to 100 km/h and a top speed of around 200 km/h. The engine bay looks dry and houses the 2.4-liter six-cylinder inline engine: a cast-iron block with an aluminum SOHC cylinder head and a chain-driven camshaft, delivering 150 hp via twin carburetors and known for its smooth operation and reliability. The 4-speed manual gearbox drives the rear wheels. The car drives, brakes, and shifts well. The car is well maintained, with a maintenance specification available. Many new parts have been fitted. Fully ready for the next owner! The last service was performed in May 2025. GENERAL: In 1969 the Datsun 240Z (also known as the 'Fairlady') was introduced. With specs such as a six-cylinder engine with an overhead cam, front disc brakes, and independent four-wheel suspension, the car shared similarities with much more expensive sports cars like the Jaguar E-Type and BMW 2800 CS, but at the price of cars like the Alfa Romeo Spider, MG B and Opel GT (all of which had four-cylinder engines). The Z-series was a worldwide success. In 1974 the 240Z was succeeded by the 260Z, and later by the 280Z. Even today, the car is regarded as a well-driving GT with sporty and attractive looks, but also good driving characteristics. The model has become increasingly cherished.
