Superlative original offset lithograph poster in full color signed on the plate from the emblematic work by David Hockney (1937-2026) “Polaroids of Swimmer” (1982). This poster is part of the prestigious series of 15 artist posters commissioned by the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, bringing together several great names of international contemporary art. One of the most coveted, historic, and popular editions by David Hockney, loved by American and international collectors. This composition depicts a swimmer seen diving (or mid-air), beneath rippling water, divided into 12 squares, reconstructed from an assemblage of Polaroid photographs, a technique Hockney experimented with in the early 1980s called "Joiner." Reflections on the water and the fragmentation of the image perfectly illustrate his explorations of perception, motion, and space. About the artist: David Hockney’s art remains fascinating for its pleasant ambiguities: his prints, drawings, and paintings are warm yet in some ways distant; filled with light yet often dark and unsettling; simple, frank, and banal, but also ethereal and complex. The artist’s stature in the contemporary art world is such that, in a 2011 survey of a thousand British painters and sculptors, he was named the most influential British artist of all time. Hockney grew up in Bradford, in Yorkshire, northern England. He studied at Bradford School of Art from 1953 to 1957, then at the Royal College of Art in London from 1959 to 1962. Although trained in art during a period when abstraction dominated the field, Hockney remained resolutely committed to figurative painting and drawing. Hockney’s early paintings suggest a search for a style, moving from expressionism toward a grotesque reminiscent of James Ensor. But Hockney found himself almost immediately upon arriving in Los Angeles in 1963. The shift from grey, rainy Britain to a sunny world with sparkling water gave Hockney a sense of freedom and artistic epiphany. He spent most of the following five years in L.A., painting bright canvases such as A Bigger Splash (1967), things that made him happy: pools, manicured lawns, palm trees, stucco buildings, and luxury objects like shower cubicles. Hockney also painted people, almost always his friends. His California portraits such as Beverly Hills Housewife (1966) are considered his best works—they are simultaneously grand, intimate, and poetic. In the 1970s, Hockney returned to Britain and devoted much of his time to photography and printmaking. He returned to painting in the 1980s, tackling subjects such as still lifes, marine landscapes, and portraits. Hockney has always been fascinated by the use of technology in art—he is credited with inventing the technique of assembling Polaroid photos into a collage to form a panoramic image—and he has used the Brush app to paint on an iPad. Because he is prolific and works across a wide range of supports, Hockney’s art is available at many price points.
