A highly decorative casket dating to circa 1900 executed in the richly ornamental historicist tradition of the era. The casket has a wooden construction with an exceptionally elaborate exterior featuring silver-grey and gold-coloured decorative metal elements. The combination of the aged metal surfaces, intricate ornamentation and warm wooden structure gives the piece a particularly luxurious and atmospheric appearance. The domed lid is beautifully decorated with broad ornamental metal bands featuring intricate floral, scrolling and classical motifs. The richly detailed borders and raised decorative elements continue around the body of the casket, creating a strong sense of symmetry and craftsmanship. A particularly attractive feature is the ornamental metal carrying handle on top. Its elaborate scrolling design and naturally aged surface make it an important part of the overall appearance of the piece. The front is centred by an impressive ornamental escutcheon and lock plate, surrounded by finely worked decorative elements. Together with the side and lower borders, this gives the casket a remarkably rich appearance despite its compact dimensions. The interior retains its beautiful red textile/velvet lining, including decorative edging. The deep red interior provides a striking contrast with the aged exterior and enhances the luxurious character of the casket. The metalwork has developed an attractive natural antique patina, with visible age-related wear, oxidation and variations in colour. These characteristics have been preserved and contribute to the authentic appearance and character of the piece. The combination of the domed form, elaborate metal ornamentation, decorative carrying handle and rich red interior makes this a particularly appealing collector’s piece and an excellent example of the decorative taste of the Napoleon III period.
