DENMARK. 2 Krone (8 Mark), 1659. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC EF Details--Edge Damage, Cleaned. Dav-3575; KM-224; Hede-101; Sieg-54; Schou-31; Aagaard-75.1; Bruun-6279. Weight: 44.06 gms. Mintmaster: Henrik Köhler. Only three pieces of this iconic Double Krone have been recorded: one in the Danish National Collection and two in private ownership-the Hede example and the present piece, which is vastly superior in condition. This fascinating type was struck to commemorate the failure of the Swedish king, Carl X Gustav, to capture Copenhagen. The monogram of King Frederik III is shown above a stone with the text EBEN EZER, referring to the Old Testament (1 Samuel 7:12) in which Samuel erected a "stone of help" (Eben-ha-Ezer) between Mizpah and Jeshanah to honor the Lord for his help in securing the Israelites a victory over the Philistines. Estimate: €5,000 - €7,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 1371 in his collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E.
