Hauberg-13; Hauberg Collection-1418; Poulsen-JY21.6; Bruun-2243. A marvelous, exquisitely toned mint state piece. This portrait ranks among the absolute finest of all Danish coin portraits prior to 1500. Although the hair, beard, and royal crown are depicted using simple means, they are executed with a confident hand, and the deep bracteate strike enhances the character of the portrait. Excessively rare. Founded in the early Middle Ages as a central assembly point, Hjørring (which on the coin gives the latinized name, Heringa) grew into the primary administrative and religious hub of Vendsyssel. Its name derives from the Old Norse Hjarnung, likely meaning "the place on the hard ground." By the mid-12th century, the town's prominent status was cemented when a royal mint was established under King Sweyn Grathe. Known for its strategic inland location, the early town flourished around its central marketplace and the construction of three major stone churches, which underscored its role as a regional capital.
