DENMARK. Restrike Silver Medal on the Battle of Nyborg, 1659. Copenhagen.

DENMARK. Restrike Silver Medal on the Battle of Nyborg, 1659. Copenhagen. Frederik III. NGC Unc Details--Scratches. Galster-84; JS-261; Ossbahr-30; Bruun-15279. Weight: 160 gms. Diameter: 73 mm. Engraver: Jeremias Hercules (IH). A wonderfully detailed piece with a nice toning and only very faint scratches to be seen in the fields. This exceptional and amusing silver medal commemorates Denmark's decisive victory over Sweden at the Battle of Nyborg during the Dano-Swedish Wars. Modeled after a wax sculpture now preserved at Rosenborg Castle, the obverse features highly political wartime satire utilizing heraldic symbolism. A majestic Danish elephant, representing the monarchy, hurls a turbaned figure into the air - a direct mockery of the Swedish commander, Philip von Sulzbach. Simultaneously, the elephant crushes a capricorn under its weight (a pun on the defeated Swedish Field Marshal Gustav Otto Stenbock) while trampling a serpent of treachery beneath its feet. The reverse bears an eight-line Latin inscription alongside the date of the battle (November 14, 1659), translated as: "As a reward for my magnanimity, now that those who act with violence or cunning are defeated, I shall be safe everywhere." Estimate: €3,000 - €4,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here.
