DENMARK. War of Religion Silver Medal, ND (1625). Copenhagen. Christian IV. NGC MS-61. Galster-44; JS-238; Bruun-15260. Weight: 106 gms. Diameter: 57 mm. Engraver: Nicolaus Schwabe (?). A very rare medal with a high relief, Mint State and immense eye appeal. In 1625, King Christian IV entered the Thirty Years' War as the champion of the Protestant cause, aiming to halt Catholic imperial expansion and secure Danish economic control over North German trade routes. However, his intervention, known as the Emperor's War, ended in a catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Lutter am Barenberg in 1626, leading to the brutal occupation of Jutland. The conflict concluded with the 1629 Treaty of Lübeck, which restored his territories but forced him to pledge never to interfere in German affairs again, permanently weakening Denmark's position as a European superpower. The artistically striking and enigmatic reverse is a clear reference to the chivalric order "The Order of the Armed Fist", instituted by the King in 1616, which can be seen as a precursor to "The Order of the Elephant".
