Dick Bruna: “Miffy and Giraffes”. Miffy was conceived by the Dutch graphic artist Dick Bruna, who was born in 1927 — the year of the rabbit according to the Japanese zodiac. In 1955, during a rainy seaside holiday in the Netherlands, Dick Bruna amused his young son by sketching a tame rabbit hopping around in the garden of their holiday home. Before going to bed, he invented stories about the little rabbit, and thus the character Miffy (Nijntje in the original Dutch) came to be. The Miffy stories have now been published in more than 50 languages, and more than 85 million copies have been sold. Miffy has her own TV series — Miffy and Friends — and toys and merchandise are sold on five continents. Dick Bruna has published 124 picture books to date, of which 30 are about Miffy. Over the years Bruna has illustrated more than 2,000 book covers and more than 100 posters. Never framed and kept in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
