Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) - Sharecropper family near Hazlehurst, Georgia 1937

Dorothea Lange’s photograph "Sharecropper family on a cart near Hazlehurst, Georgia" (1937) is a poignant portrait of rural struggle during the Great Depression. Captured while Lange was working for the U.S. Resettlement Administration (later part of the Farm Security Administration, or FSA), it remains a classic example of social documentary Historical Context: In 1937, the American Deep South was devastated by both the Great Depression and systemic agricultural hardship. Sharecropping—a system where tenant farmers farmed land in exchange for a share of the crop—often kept families trapped in cycles of debt and poverty. The Mission: The FSA commissioned photographers like Lange, Walker Evans, and Gordon Parks to document the living conditions of rural Americans. The goal was to build public and political support for New Deal relief programs and farm security legislation. Low Camera Angle: Lange positioned herself slightly below the family on their mule- or horse-drawn wooden cart, giving the subjects dignity rather than rendering them as helpless victims. Direct Gaze: The father at the front sits leaning forward with reins in hand, making direct eye contact with the lens. His stoic, guarded expression emphasizes quiet endurance. Family Unit: Behind him, his wife in a sunbonnet holds an infant, while young children peek through the gaps, highlighting the family reliance on rural mobility to survive.photography. Lange excelled at taking abstract economic crises and attaching recognizable human faces to them. Rather than staging a scene, she captured real moments of transition as families moved between tenant plots or headed to town for provisions. LC-USF34-017695-C (b&w film nitrate neg.)
