Duane Maktima Laguna-Hopi 14K Yellow Gold Inlaid Boulder Opal & Onyx Pendant. Featuring boulder opal, white opal & black onyx. Duane Maktima is a noted Hopi-Laguna artist and jeweler recognized for contemporary designs combining traditional Native American influences with a modern, abstract aesthetic. A multidisciplinary artist working in jewelry, carving, and painting, Maktima is known for incorporating silver, gold, turquoise, lapis, coral, shell, and other materials into distinctive geometric compositions. Maktima studied art at Northern Arizona University and, at approximately 19 years old, became a resident artist at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. His work reflects his Hopi and Laguna heritage as well as his study of broader artistic traditions. In the early 1980s, he received a fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) and later established himself in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His jewelry has been exhibited and represented by prominent Native American art galleries throughout the United States. In addition to his work as an artist, Maktima has served as a teacher and mentor to younger Native artists.
