Dutch school (XX) - Oriëntalistisch stadsgezicht

Orientalist cityscape. Oil painting on canvas. Signed. Overall size including frame: 40 x 34 cm. The painting and the frame are in good condition with signs of age. The (younger) frame has a few unobtrusive signs of use. Atmospheric and distinctive orientalist street scene, executed in oil paint and characterized by a strong, very thick, impasto brushwork. The scene guides the viewer into a narrow, ascending street, presumably in a North African medina or kasbah. Between the tall facades, several figures in traditional dress move about. On the left, colorful fabrics or merchandise are visible, giving the whole the lively atmosphere of an old market or shopping street. Particularly appealing is the strong perspective. The gaze is drawn from the foreground, up the steps, deeper into the narrow street. The solitary light figure at the top of the stairs forms a beautiful resting point in the composition. The artist has applied the paint thickly and expressively in several places with brush and possibly a palette knife. Especially the light walls, cobblestones, and the clothing of the figures thus acquire a distinct relief. This impasto gives the painting a vivid, almost tangible surface. The restrained palette of turquoise, emerald green, ocher, cream, and ochre gray is enlivened by a few red accents. The strong contrast between light and shadow enhances the intimate, somewhat mysterious atmosphere of the old street. The work aligns with the 20th-century Orientalist painting tradition, in which European and local artists drew inspiration from street life, architecture, and the special light of North Africa and the Middle East. The painting is provided with a broad, classically crafted gold-colored frame with a decorative inner edge, which nicely complements the warm tones of the work.
