Early XXth Century bedlinen

An Exceptional Set of Antique French Linen Bed Linen – A.P. Initials This is one of three virtually identical pieces of exceptional antique bed linen, all beautifully embroidered with the initials A.P. The provenance is particularly special. They come from the château close to where I live in France, from which I have been privileged to acquire a number of wonderful pieces over the past two years. The now elderly owners have been the “custodians” of four generations of their family’s linen, carefully preserving it in the château’s magnificent linen room. Much of the collection has remained untouched for many years, protected within the ten large linen armoires where it has been kept in remarkably good condition. Sadly, none of the children or grandchildren have any interest in assuming the considerable responsibility involved in caring for such a collection. At the same time, the château itself, dating back to the 17th century, is facing serious financial difficulties and requires substantial and urgent restoration. The family has therefore taken the difficult decision to gradually part with some of its ancestral heirlooms in order to help with the upkeep of the property. The Linen The quality of these three pieces is truly exceptional. Although woven entirely in pure linen, the fabric has an extraordinary softness and suppleness, almost giving the impression that silk has been incorporated into the weave. It is remarkably fine to the touch and possesses the beautiful fluidity associated with the very best traditional French linen. Each of the three pieces bears the initials A.P., individually hand embroidered, with each having its own slight variation in execution and finish. The initials measure approximately 15 cm and are particularly impressive in their workmanship. Each letter incorporates 2 delicate muguet ,lily of the valley, flower , the ever popular flower in the 18th and 19th Century The embroidery has been worked in high relief, with fine outlining stitches used to create additional depth, allowing the initials to stand beautifully proud against the ground of the linen. The borders are finished with exquisite “Ajours de Venise” – open-thread work, a traditional and highly decorative form of French whitework. Here, the work remains in remarkably perfect condition, with no repairs, breakages or missing sections. Perhaps most impressive of all is the exceptional width of approximately 2.40 metres. This generous dimension strongly suggests that the linen was specially woven and commissioned for the family, rather than being a standard commercially produced piece. A remarkable example of fine French household linen, combining exceptional fabric, superb hand embroidery, beautiful open-thread work and an important château provenance. It is a piece that has been carefully preserved through four generations and now offers a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of French textile heritage.
