Earrings Made from Antique Collar Buttons with Sapphires & Onyx, from

Time and again, we come across old pieces of jewellery in antique shops, at auctions, or at flea markets—pieces that are rarely worn in their original form today. Even so, if we particularly like their design or if they’re made of beautiful materials, we often can’t resist them. Together with our goldsmith, we give these finds a new purpose and transform them into pieces of jewellery that can once again be worn with ease. Antique shirt and collar buttons are particularly good for this. Until the early 20th century, detachable, starched collars were a staple of the elegant men’s wardrobe. They were attached to the shirt with special buttons, which—in the case of particularly luxurious ensembles—could even be made of gold, platinum, and gemstones. As men’s fashion evolved, detachable collars gradually fell out of style, and with them, the once-common collar buttons also disappeared. This pair of earrings was created from such a find. The two former collar buttons date from the 1920s and exemplify the Art Deco style’s characteristic delight in geometric forms and striking material contrasts. At the center of each is a small, deep-blue sapphire surrounded by a light, shimmering disc of mother-of-pearl. A narrow white gold frame encases the round gemstone elements. Hanging below each is a freely moving, teardrop-shaped pendant made of deep black onyx. The interplay of colours and materials is particularly beautiful. The deep blue of the sapphires adds a subtle accent against the light mother-of-pearl, while the black onyx teardrops create a striking contrast. With its cool luster, the white gold underscores the elegant design of the pieces of jewellery. We have fitted the former collar buttons with simple, newly crafted gold hooks, thereby giving them a new purpose. Two small treasures from a man’s wardrobe have thus been transformed into elegant earrings that preserve the charm of the 1920s and can be worn beautifully once again today.
