Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / École du Pérou (c. 1750) - La Cour Céleste - XL
- Oil on canvas. Antique rentelado. Good overall condition. - This representation of the Celestial Court constitutes a very clear testimony to the dogmatic fixation that characterized seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Peruvian Viceroyal art. In the viceroyal context, the transposition of Counter-Reformation dogmas answered not only a pedagogical aim but a real need to reinforce Catholic orthodoxy through a visual display of overwhelming theological certainty. The depiction of the Holy Trinity presiding over a space saturated with angelic hierarchies thus becomes a doctrinal artifact where each figure fulfils a precise pedagogical function, rigorously delimiting the geography of Heaven. Beyond its evident devotional tone, the work is fully embedded in the colonial fascination with eschatological subjects and the militant order of the cosmos. The Quito and Lima schools developed a deep interest in angelology and the triumph of Faith, conceiving the Celestial Court as a perfectly organized and hierarchized spiritual army. In this table, the dense mass of clouds operates as a mystical trench where legions of angels —some musicians, others in continual prayer— flank the divine throne to reaffirm the invincible power of the Church triumphant. The synthetic composition, combined with the chromatic richness of the mantles and the ceremonial inclusion of the phylactery, transforms the canvas into a dazzling theater of sacred power, where aesthetic sumptuousness serves the military and spiritual victory of dogma over the world's dimness. - Image dimensions without frame: 101 x 53 cm / 117 x 69.5 with an elegant historicist-style frame.
