French School, late 18th – early 19th century Portrait of a woman wearing a blue bonnet Beautiful antique pastel portrait on paper depicting a middle-aged woman, shown bust-length and looking directly at the viewer. The model wears an imposing white headdress adorned with a large bow with light blue ribbons and small dark motifs. The hairstyle and costume evoke fashion from the end of the 18th century. The portrait stands out for the quality of the facial treatment. Close examination allows us to observe the pastel work directly on the support: fine strokes of pigment, delicate shading of the complexion, rosy tints on the cheeks and nose, blue-gray shadows around the eyes and a small bright highlight in the gaze. The texture of the paper remains clearly perceptible. The reverse reveals an old, strongly patinated and oxidized sheet, showing a fibrous texture and various traces related to its aging. The work is unsigned, or no signature could be identified. The exact dating remains to be determined. In light of the portrait’s style, costume, technique, and the appearance of the support, an attribution to the French School of the late 18th or early 19th century is conceivable. The work had previously been offered for sale as dating to the late 19th century.
