École italienne (XVIII-XIX) - Le Transport du Christ au tombeau

The Relocation of Christ to the Tomb Oil on panel. Estimated period: late 18th century – first half of the 19th century Interesting ancient religious painting executed in oils on panel, representing the transfer of Christ's body after the Crucifixion, an episode closely related to the Deposition and Burial of Christ. The scene unfolds through a vertical composition of marked devotional character. In the foreground appears the inert body of Christ, partially covered by the shroud and carefully carried by several figures. Christ's figure constitutes the main luminous focus of the composition: the clarity of the flesh tones contrasts intensely with the dark background and immediately directs the viewer's gaze to the central episode. Behind him appears the Virgin Mary, covered by a wide blue mantle and with hands clasped in prayer and contemplation. On both sides are arranged the remaining figures, traditionally related to the transfer and burial of Christ, among them figures that can be identified within the iconography of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Particularly interesting is the treatment of the old man who holds the upper part of Christ's body, characterized by gray beard, turban, and a wide reddish mantle. In chromatic opposition, the figure on the left is dressed in green. The blues, greens, ochres, and reds of the garments stand out against a deliberately dark background, intensifying the solemn character of the representation. Stylet and chronology The work presents a deliberately archaizing language, inspired by models of Italian Renaissance religious painting and the later tradition. The defined drawing, the serenity of expressions, the orderly arrangement of the figures, and the absence of excessively baroque drama bring the composition closer to a classical and devotional sensibility. Based on its stylistic characteristics and materials, we consider it reasonable to place it between the late 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, probably around the early decades of the 1800s. However, since it is an old work with no known historical documentation and executed following earlier pictorial models, the dating should be understood as a historical-artistic estimate, open to a live technical examination that could specify its chronology. The painting can be related to the realm of European religious painting of Italian tradition, although at present we do not have sufficient elements to determine a specific production center with certainty. Therefore, it seems more prudent to present it as a European school, probably Italian, rather than making a definitive geographic attribution. A particularly singular format One of the most attractive aspects of the piece is its feature of an ogival termination, conceived as a small altarpiece or altar painting. The pointed arch gives the whole a strong architectural presence and reinforces its religious character. This type of format consciously reclaim solutions typical of ancient altarpieces and European devotional painting, contributing to the archaizing character of the work. The painting is executed on a panel, the reverse of which remains visible. The wood construction, its joints, irregularities, signs of use, and patina are especially interesting elements for understanding the material antiquity of the ensemble. The pictorial surface shows craquelure, wear, small losses, and various signs typical of the passage of time. These circumstances are consistent with the antiquity attributed to the piece and can be observed in detail in the photographs. The work preserves its Gothic-arched wooden frame, likewise with important signs of antiquity, wear, small losses, and old interventions. The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow a detailed assessment of both the painting's condition and the support and frame. The frame is included gratis as a gift, without attributing it commercial value. Due to its age and condition, any eventual damage suffered by the frame during transport cannot be a reason for complaint. The work will be carefully packaged using suitable materials to guarantee maximum protection possible during transport. IMPORTANT: shipments to islands, non-mainland territories, or destinations requiring customs procedures may entail additional transport, handling, and/or customs costs, which will be borne by the buyer.
