His works, marked by intense emotionality, distorted body postures, and often a sombre atmosphere, address themes such as sexuality, transience, and psychological depth. Schiele was heavily influenced by Gustav Klimt, who supported him, and whose ornamental Jugendstil shaped his early style. While Klimt preferred a decorative and golden aesthetic, Schiele developed a rougher, more intimate visual language. Also close to him were Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl, who dealt with expression and inner turmoil. His expressive lines and the intense portrayals of human emotions recall works by Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh, who also worked with psychological expression and existential themes. The bold colors and deformed figures in his paintings show parallels with the works of German Expressionists, particularly Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, and Max Beckmann. His interest in physicality and human vulnerability shares common ground with Käthe Kollwitz, whose drawings exhibit a similar existential depth. At the same time, his works reveal symbolic influences from Odilon Redon and Fernand Khnopff, who also explored dream realms and inner states. Schiele’s significance for modern art is evident in his influence on subsequent generations, including Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, who engaged with the representation of the body in an intense, often disturbing manner. Jean-Michel Basquiat also adopted Schiele’s expressive, spontaneous line work and his fascination with the unconscious. With his uncompromising view of humanity and his ability to expose internal conflicts, Egon Schiele shaped the development of modern art and left behind an impressive, albeit short, artistic legacy.
