Collection of Esther Shaver, Beaufort, SC Description: Eliot Clark (NY/VA, 1883-1980), Landscape, Oil on Board, 1906, signed and dated on verso, depicting a wooden landscape with a stream, in an ornate multi-layered wooden frame without glass. Frame size: 19 1/4 in. x 16 1/4 in. The son of a painter, Eliot Clark grew up in a studio, surrounded by artists. He studied briefly at the Art Students League before travelling Europe to observe the work of the Old Masters. Clark served as Secretary, Vice President and eventually President of the National Academy of Design. In addition to working alongside other prominent American Tonalists, Clark authored monographs on several of his favorite artists, including Hassam and Courbet, while exhibiting his own work widely. He taught at the Art Students League and was a visiting instructor at the Savannah Art Club. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Parrish Art Museum, and the Weisman Art Museum.Measurements: Height: by sight 11 1/4 in. x Width: 8 1/4 in. Condition: Overall good condition, minor loss to greenery, minor wear to surface with minor craquelure, wear to frame with some cracks.
