WEGELIN Émile (1875-1962) “Olives in Falicon” Mixed media on cardboard, Signed bottom left, Located and dated on the back of the cardboard: "Falicon - 1949", Beautiful luminous work by the Lyonnais painter and athlete Emile Wegelin, which depicts a view of a corner of the village of Falicon in summer, on the heights of Nice. As usual, the artist uses a palette of warm colors and plays with the effects of light. Falicon is a perched Provencal village in the Alpes-MMaritimes, on one of the hills overlooking the city of Nice. It lies between Aspremont, Saint André de la Roche and Tourette-Levens. Wegelin began his artistic career by studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he trained in painting. He quickly specialized in landscapes, particularly mountain views, countryside scenes and seascapes. Émile Wegelin’s style is characterized by a great sensitivity to nature, expressed through a palette of soft, nuanced colors. His canvases are imbued with a deep sense of harmony with nature, inviting the viewer to contemplation and meditation. He participated in exhibitions notably in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, where his talent was praised by critics and appreciated by the public. Alongside his artistic career, Emile Wegelin was a rower with the Lyon Nautical Club. He competed with his teammates in the four with coxswain event at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris and won the silver medal.
