Enchanting Belle Époque Necklace with Diamonds in Platinum, c. 1910

Jewellery from the early 20th century was meant to be delicate, slender, and elegant. This necklace perfectly embodies that ideal, combining the cool white of platinum and diamonds with a particularly delicate and fluid design. A slender, pendulum-shaped pendant hangs from a delicate platinum anchor chain. It begins with a small cluster of three diamonds. Below this is a row of seven diamonds connected in a flexible arrangement, leading to the true centerpiece of the design. This centerpiece is round in shape and takes the form of a stylized flower made of white diamonds. Like tiny petals, the stones surround a particularly beautiful old-cut diamond weighing approximately 0.36 carats. Twelve smaller stones frame the large center stone. With its clean lines and soft luster, the composition is reminiscent of the simple bloom of a daisy. The pendant is crafted entirely from platinum. Delicate milgrains adorn the settings, making the contours of the individual stones appear even more delicate. The original anchor chain is also made of platinum, ensuring that the entire piece of jewellery maintains a uniform, cool white hue. Such delicate diamond necklaces were particularly popular in the early decades of the 20th century. Platinum played a decisive role in this trend. Its strength allowed for significantly finer settings than the gold alloys previously in use and enabled designs in which the metal seemed to almost disappear behind the diamonds. It was precisely this lightness that became a hallmark of the Belle Époque and early Art Deco. This wonderfully preserved necklace found its way to us from Stuttgart.
