TITLE Enrico Baj (1924–2003) – Generale CATALOGUE DETAILS Artist: Enrico Baj (1924–2003) Title: Generale Country: Italy Period: Second half of the 20th century Year: Undated Technique: Colour etching and aquatint Material: Paper Style: Contemporary Subject: Figurative / Portrait Signature: Signed in pencil at the lower right Edition: Annotated “C/E” in pencil at the lower left; edition size not established for this impression Sheet dimensions: Approximately 70 × 50 cm (height × width) Framed: Yes Frame: Light-coloured wooden frame with glass Condition: Age-related yellowing and scattered spots to the margins DESCRIPTION A striking colour etching and aquatint depicting one of Enrico Baj’s characteristic “Generals”. The expressive figure features an exaggerated face, a vivid blue sash, a red collar and military decorations against a textured green background. Fine intersecting lines and contrasting areas of colour give the composition its distinctive character, combining visual humour with Baj’s satirical treatment of military authority. Signed in pencil at the lower right and annotated “C/E” at the lower left. The sheet measures approximately 70 × 50 cm and is presented in a light-coloured wooden frame with glass, included in the sale. CONDITION The colours retain their vibrancy. Age-related yellowing and scattered brown spots are visible in the surrounding paper margins, as documented in the original photographs and close-ups. ABOUT THE ARTIST Enrico Baj (1924–2003) was a prominent Italian artist and a distinctive voice in the post-war avant-garde. He co-founded the Nuclear Art Movement in 1951. Known for his experimental techniques and imaginative imagery, he combined humour with social criticism. His celebrated “Generals” are among his most recognisable subjects. PHOTOGRAPHS Original photographs document the actual work and its condition. Images labelled “AI-generated for Catawiki” are illustrative settings or simulated views. SHIPPING The framed work will be carefully packed with protective materials suitable for transport.
