The sculptor, graphic artist and writer born in 1870 in Wedel developed a distinctive visual language, characterized by expressive intensity and profound humanity. In addition to his well-known sculptures, Barlach created an extensive graphic oeuvre with striking woodcuts, lithographs, and drawings. His works deal with existential themes such as suffering, hope, loneliness, and human dignity. Characteristic are the reduced forms, powerful lines, and the intense emotional impact of his representations. Ernst Barlach is regarded as one of the most important representatives of Expressionist sculpture and printmaking of the 20th century.
