Erwin Olaf (1959–2023) - Minerva

About the work: In 2011 Museum De Lakenhal and Leiden University jointly commissioned Erwin Olaf to create a contemporary history piece on the Siege and Relief of Leiden (1574). The result was a monumental tableau staged in Leiden's Pieterskerk, accompanied by six figure portraits and two still lifes. Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, appears in the series as the symbol of Leiden University, which William of Orange founded in 1575 as a reward for the city's resistance. The series is held in the collections of Museum De Lakenhal and Leiden University Libraries.
