Escuela Barroca Italiana (XVII) - San Geronimo

Title: Saint Jerome School: Italian Baroque (XVII) Style: Baroque Technique: Oil on canvas Magnificent depiction of Saint Jerome, one of the Fathers of the Church, iconographed as a hermit and scholar of the Sacred Scriptures. The composition shows the saint in a moment of deep reflection while holding an open book and directing his gaze toward the texts he studies. His anatomy, of pronounced naturalism, appears partially unveiled and modeled through an intense chiaroscuro that emphasizes the drama of the scene, a feature characteristic of Italian Baroque painting of the seventeenth century. On the table are arranged various elements typical of his traditional iconography: a book, parchment and a skull, symbol of the transience of life and of meditation on death, reinforcing the ascetic and contemplative character of the composition. The dark background concentrates all attention on the figure of the saint, while the directed lighting highlights the face, the hands and the torso with a marked tenebrism influence. The work presents a careful brushstroke and an excellent volumetric construction, especially notable in the treatment of the skin, the beard and the folds of the mantle, elements that provide great expressive strength and psychological depth to the character. Contains restorations. Observations: The work may incur damages during transport even with proper packaging. In that case, we will need photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation.
