Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / Escuela Cuzqueña (XX) - Virgen de la Candelaria (Madonna della Candelora)

This painting is a typical example of Peruvian colonial art, specifically attributable to the famous Cusco School (Escuela Cuzqueña). Characteristics of the Work • Subject: It depicts the Madonna with Child arranged according to the classic iconography of the Andean Virgins (such as Virgen de la Candelaria or Virgen de Pomata). The figure of the Virgin takes on a rigid pyramidal or conical shape, a geometric structure that the indigenous populations of the Andean area symbolically associated with the sacredness of Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the sacred mountains (Apus). • Iconographic Elements: The Madonna wears a sumptuous royal crown, a veil and a richly decorated mantle, and holds in her hand a golden scepter, symbol of her status as Queen of Heaven. On her left arm she supports the Child Jesus, also crowned and dressed in ceremonial clothes from the colonial era. A white and red diagonal sash crosses her chest. • Style: The elaborate gold foliate motifs applied to the heavy garment reflect the technique of brocateado de oro (or estofado), a distinctive trait of the Cusco painters who used gold leaf to make the sacred garments stand out from the dark background of the canvas. This type of devotional paintings was widely produced between the 17th and 18th centuries by local artists (often anonymous or of indigenous origin) to decorate churches and viceregal residences throughout the Andean regions of South America.
