Title: The Drinker ㅤ School: European Impressionist School (19th century) ㅤ Style: Realism of everyday life with impressionist influences ㅤ Technique: Oil on canvas ㅤ Condition: State of conservation in keeping with its age. It presents restorations, signs of aging and surface wear typical of the passage of time. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: Work stylistically linked to the tradition of European genre portrait of the 19th century, with influences from French Realism and Central European genre painting. Its psychological treatment and naturalistic representation of the subject recall the proposals of artists such as Gustave Courbet and Wilhelm Leibl, especially for the interest in everyday faces and the dignification of popular characters. These references are exclusively stylistic and do not constitute an attribution of authorship. ㅤ The composition features a portrait of a mature man, with dark, slightly wavy hair and a face marked by age, rendered mid-length against a neutral background of grayish tones. The protagonist wears a light shirt under a dark waistcoat and delicately holds a small crystal glass, while directing his gaze toward a point outside the composition. Notable is the careful treatment of the features, especially the wrinkles on the forehead, the contemplative expression of the eyes, and the volumetric construction of the face through subtle light contrasts. The palette, dominated by ochres, earth tones, and grays, provides an intimate atmosphere that accentuates the psychological character of the portrait. ㅤ The execution combines relatively restrained brushwork in the face with freer solutions in the clothing and background, evidencing a transition between the academic tradition and the new pictorial sensibilities of the 19th century.
