Alle Auktionen / Antike Kunst / Europe Merovingian gilded silver fibula - 10 cm

This Merovingian gilded silver fibula is an extraordinary example of the goldsmithing and ornamental aesthetics characteristic of the 6th and 7th centuries AD. Used to fasten garments, this accessory not only had a practical function, but also symbolized the social and cultural status of its owner, being an indicator of rank or position within the social structures of early medieval Europe. The piece features an elaborate design with spiral and geometric motifs in relief, a typical style of Merovingian art, combining Germanic influences with elements of the late classical tradition. The ornamentation includes finely crafted details that reflect an advanced technical mastery and artistic sensibility that stands out in this period. These fibulae were essential not only as functional accessories, but also as prestige objects that reinforced cultural and political identities in the turbulent context of the barbarian kingdoms in Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Acquired from a Spanish private collection, J.A.U in 1972. -The piece includes an authenticity certificate as well as the support. ( pictures ).
