European School, second half of the 16th century Portrait of a Noblewoman in Spanish Habsburg Court Dress Oil on oak panel A refined late Renaissance portrait of a noblewoman, painted in oil on panel and dating, in our opinion, from the second half of the 16th century, most plausibly circa 1570–1590. The sitter is represented in formal court dress with a broad white millstone ruff, an elaborate pearl necklace and a richly ornamented pendant jewel or brooch. These details are highly characteristic of aristocratic fashion within the Spanish Habsburg court sphere during the later 16th century. Comparison with François Clouet The portrait displays several notable stylistic and costume-related similarities to François Clouet’s portrait of Elisabeth of Austria, Queen of France, circa 1571, now in the Musée du Louvre. Particularly striking is the closely comparable treatment of the broad circular millstone ruff, framing the sitter’s face in almost the same manner. The formal frontal pose, restrained facial expression and elegant court presentation also belong to the same international aristocratic portrait tradition. Further similarities can be seen in the sitter’s jewellery: the prominent double strands of pearls, the pendant ornament at the chest and the refined contrast between pale skin, white linen and darker costume elements. Such details are strongly associated with high ranking female portraiture of the Habsburg courts in the third quarter of the 16th century. The resemblance does not in itself establish either authorship or identity, but it provides an important stylistic and chronological point of comparison. No definitive identification of the sitter is claimed. Dating and support The work is painted on an old wooden oak panel with bevelled edges. The construction, surface and patina are consistent with considerable age and support a dating to the 16th century. Dimensions Overall dimensions including frame: approximately 40 × 34 cm Painted panel: approximately 26 × 20 cm. Presented in a dark wooden frame. Condition The painting is in attractive historic condition. The varnish has yellowed considerably with age, giving the work a warm and somewhat muted appearance. Professional cleaning would likely reveal greater depth, contrast and colour. Examination under UV light shows a visible area of retouching to the sitter’s cheek / lower jawline. No extensive later overpainting is apparent from the available examination. There is age related craquelure, minor wear and small imperfections consistent with the age of the work. No recent cleaning or restoration has been undertaken by us. Shipping The painting will be carefully and professionally packed for transport, with particular attention to the historic panel and frame. Shipping will be arranged with tracking and insurance where available.
