Alle Auktionen / Schmuck und Edelsteine / Exceptional “Collier Princesse” Made of South Sea Pearls by Günther

“You, the dreamlike pearl of the South Seas”—in Paul Abraham’s 1931 operetta *i* *Die Blume von Hawaii* , this still referred to the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. Today, however, when people hear “South Sea pearls,” they probably think more of the precious cultured pearls that have been imported into Europe and the U.S. since the 1970s, primarily from Australia and Indonesia. For a long time, only Akoya pearls cultivated in Japan were available in a quality that could compete with natural pearls. However, their size is limited by the relatively small shell of the Akoya pearl oyster. Akoya pearls rarely reach a diameter of 10 millimeters. It was not until much later that Japanese experts succeeded in applying their knowledge of domestic pearl cultivation to the Pinctada maxima pearl oyster species—which was not used in Japan—and which is capable of producing particularly large pearls: the “South Sea pearl” was born. This necklace features 25 South Sea pearls arranged in a graduated pattern. The pearls, nearly flawless, perfectly round, and white, range in diameter from 16.3 to 19.4 mm. They are perfectly matched: Their luster is equally excellent, silky, and clear across all pearls. Their color tone is identical, and their overtone—a delicate, ethereal rosé—unifies all the pearls in the necklace. They are of superb quality. Last but not least, the size of the pearls is impressive. Even for South Sea pearls, which are already large, this size is at the upper end of what is generally available. White South Sea pearls of this exceptional size and quality are cultivated almost exclusively in Australia. We therefore assume that these pearls were also produced there, at one of the pearl farms specializing in high-quality pearls, such as Paspaley in Western Australia. The pearls are held in place by an 18-karat white gold clasp set with 3.20 ct of top-quality brilliant-cut diamonds. An elegant wave pattern on the clasp alludes to the pearls’ origin in the sea. The necklace was purchased by the previous owner around the year 2000 in Stuttgart from Günter Krauss. It comes with its original case made of padded white fabric, as well as a newly prepared appraisal report from Idar-Oberstein, which confirms the necklace’s exceptional quality.
