The custom of presenting a diamond ring as an engagement gift has been documented since the late Middle Ages. However, this hardest of all gemstones was a real treasure and almost exclusively the privilege of the nobility. It was only after rich deposits were discovered in South Africa in the late 19th century that the broader classes were able to afford diamond jewellery.
