Exquisite Art Deco Ring in Gold and Platinum with Diamonds, Germany, circa 1925

With its turn toward geometry as an aesthetic principle, Art Deco developed a design language of remarkable clarity. Symmetry, precise lines, and the rhythmic repetition of geometric motifs replaced the curving, nature-inspired ornaments of earlier decades. This gave rise to jewellery whose appeal lay not only in the brilliance of its gemstones but also in the sophistication of its architectural design. Our ring is a particularly beautiful example of this design language. Its elongated front, tapering at the ends, is reminiscent of stylized ornamental forms found in printmaking of the 1920s. Two old-cut diamonds arranged one above the other form the center of a strictly symmetrical composition consisting of diamond-shaped panels, delicate milgrains, and openwork sections. The interplay of platinum and diamonds lends the design that cool, luminous elegance so characteristic of Art Deco. Particularly appealing is the contrast between the geometric precision of the setting and the lively sparkle of the historic diamond cuts. The ring is in very good condition. The ring, which originated in the Baden region of Germany during the Weimar Republic, found its way to us.
