This pair of clip earrings is the work of the Munich jeweller Hemmerle, once purveyor to the court of the Bavarian royal family. To this day, the family business remains at its historic premises on Munich’s Maximilianstrasse and has long been regarded as one of the most important names in the international world of jewellery. Few German jewellers have succeeded as convincingly as Hemmerle in creating pieces admired equally by collectors, connoisseurs and museums alike. Today, jewellery by Hemmerle can be found in the collections of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Our clip earrings beautifully demonstrate why this is so. They combine historical elements, technical sophistication and unusual materials in a manner that feels both effortless and entirely distinctive. The earrings are designed in three parts and crafted in platinum. The upper section is formed by a light blue natural sapphire of approximately four carats in an emerald cut and set in a simple bezel setting. The oval central elements feature antique 19th century cameos carved from layered agate. They depict Alexander the Great, perhaps the most celebrated military leader of antiquity. He is shown as Zeus Ammon with the characteristic ram’s horns, in the form in which he was revered almost as a god during his lifetime. A frame of finely calibrated natural sapphires surrounds the high quality carvings. The lower section is formed by large drop shaped Tahitian pearls in a light platinum grey of exceptionally beautiful quality. Particularly sophisticated is the construction of the earrings. The individual elements can be detached and recombined through an ingenious mechanism. The sapphires may be worn on their own, as may the combination of sapphires and cameos or alternatively sapphires and Tahitian pearls without the antique cameos. It is even possible that other Hemmerle elements using the same system could be attached. In addition, the clips are fitted with screw threads for ear posts. If desired, our goldsmith can create matching posts so that the clips may also be worn as classic pierced earrings. The reverse sides of the central elements bear hand engraved serial numbers and are furthermore signed “Hemmerle”. This exceptional pair came to us from an important Stuttgart collection. The condition is excellent. The earrings are accompanied by the illustrated leather case.
