Exquisitely Echinus Esculentus - Natural Vibrant...

Exemplar of remarkable size and vivid natural coloration — This specimen represents a magnificent test (shell) of Echinus esculentus, commonly known as the common sea urchin, originating from the coastal waters of Cornwall. The species is characterized by a globular form and a distinctly evident pentaradial symmetry, fundamental elements for its identification and classification among irregular echinoids. The test, composed of calcareous plates tightly interconnected, offers an exemplary study of the morphology of this marine invertebrate. Visual analysis reveals a finely granular surface, with hemispherical tubercles well defined and regularly distributed, which in life supported the spines. The ambulacral and interambulacral bands are clearly delineated, presenting a complex architecture that reflects the animal's biology. The coloration is of particular interest: there is a natural alternation of intense orange-reddish pigments and lighter cream tones, arranged in radial patterns that emphasize the specimen's symmetry. This coloration is intrinsic to the shell and not the result of artificial treatments. The provenance from Cornwall, a region noted for its rich marine biodiversity in the North Atlantic, gives this specimen a precise geological and biological context. Echinus esculentus from this area are frequently characterized by substantial sizes, and this piece aligns perfectly with that reputation, exceeding the species’ average size, which makes it particularly appreciable. From an aesthetic standpoint, the specimen stands out for its structural integrity and excellent preservation. Every morphological detail is preserved, from the apical and periproctal areas to the finest ambulacral pores. The absence of fractures or significant abrasions contributes to its museum quality, making it an ideal display piece for any natural history or paleontology collection. The collectible value of an Echinus esculentus of these dimensions and with such vivid natural coloration is notable. Specimens of this quality are rare to find on the market, especially with reliable provenance documentation. Its intrinsic beauty and educational value make it a coveted object for both the seasoned collector and the novice fascinated by marine life.
