fabric - Thailand - Late 20th century

Pair of Thai textile artworks from the second half of the 20th century, depicting figures drawn from Thailand's traditional iconography. The figures are represented in poses characteristic of Thai classical dance and theatre, with tall, slender headdresses, ceremonial costumes richly ornamented and full of decorative details. The work is distinguished by the use of vivid tones and gilded highlights that stand out strongly against the dark background. This decorative technique, typical of many Thai works intended for framing in the mid-20th century, especially emphasizes the jewelry, headdresses and the geometric motifs of the clothing. Works executed on a fine textile. The exact nature of the textile has not been analyzed; many comparable pieces are described as made on silk, sometimes with gilded highlights or leaf metal. Origin: Thailand Estimated period: 1960s–1970s Style: traditional Thai art / Asian art Support: fine textile Subject: figures from Thai traditional dance and theatre Presentation: framed pair Frame dimensions: 48.5 cm high × 44.5 cm wide A handsome antique decorative set, particularly interesting when presented as a pair.
