Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / Federico Spoltore (1902-1988) - Ritratto femminile

Female portrait, oil on canvas, signed and dated on the right “Federico Spoltore 1940”. A pleasant portrait executed by the refined hand of Federico Spoltore, Abruzzo artist who from a young age showed a marked artistic sensibility, attracting the attention of important figures in local art, including Basilio Cascella and Francesco Paolo Michetti. After gymnasium studies in his hometown, thanks to a subsidy from the Province he moved to Rome, where he attended the Regio Istituto di Belle Arti, graduating in 1924. He also attended the figure drawing course at the École des Beaux-Arts (Academie de France). Still a student, he served as assistant to the painting chair at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, a position he left at the end of his studies to devote himself entirely to painting. Spoltore established himself mainly as a portrait painter, receiving numerous public and private commissions. During his career he painted portraits of important political, cultural and religious figures, as well as members of royal families. Particularly significant was the portrait of Pope Pius XII, completed in 1947 and used as the official effigy on the occasion of the Holy Year of 1950. From the 1950s his interest progressively shifted toward a more abstract and symbolic painting, though without completely abandoning the figurative tradition. The identity of the woman depicted in the present painting is not currently documented. Given the dating of 1940 and the nature of the work, it is plausible that this is a private portrait executed on commission, possibly intended for a relative, a patron, or a person belonging to the artist’s circle. However, this hypothesis cannot be considered certain in the absence of documentation. The period between the 1920s and 1940s is historically the most sought-after for his portraits. Dimensions: canvas 43 × 40 cm. Dimensions with frame: 61.5 × 59 cm. The work shows some slight scratches and signs of aging, which do not seem to compromise the canvas or the overall legibility of the painting. It is nevertheless advisable to refer to the photographs for a complete assessment of the conservation status. Potential buyers are invited to carefully view the photographs and all details of the work before purchase, in order to avoid subsequent disputes regarding the conservation status. The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy and is not an integral part of the work. Any damage to the frame will not be a valid reason for claims or order cancellations.
