Festive Antique Locket Brooch with Garnets in Silver, c. 1880

The Bohemian garnet enjoyed a true heyday in the 19th century. The style of garnet jewelry that we most commonly associate with this stone today—stars and flowers made up of countless garnets set close together—developed during this period. Later, the aesthetic of closely set garnets was retained, but the designs adapted to the fashion trends of the time. Here is a sparkling diamond-shaped design made of garnets that can be worn as a brooch. The design is arranged in two tiers. The numerous dark-red garnets are cut into round roses and, thanks to the foil settings typical of the period, glow an intense red in the light. The red gemstones are set in silver, as was typical of the period. On the reverse side is a glass-covered medallion compartment for storing personal mementos or a photograph. This piece, created at the end of the 19th century, found its way to us here in Berlin.
