The Arabian Nights Entertainments, Carefully Revised, and Occasionally Corrected from the Arabic… SCOTT, JONATHAN. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1811. First Scott edition, complete in six volumes, and the desirable illustrated issue, with six engraved frontispieces after Robert Smirke. Jonathan Scott's 1811 edition was an important early attempt to produce a more literary English version of The Arabian Nights, incorporating corrections from the Arabic and new tales translated from Arabic sources. A particularly handsome uniform set in contemporary full leather, with elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, gilt edges, decorative gilt borders, and richly marbled endpapers. Complete and collated, with all six frontispieces present. The bindings show expected rubbing and wear at the extremities and spine ends, but remain very attractive and display beautifully. Internally, the volumes are generally clean and well preserved for their age, with little or no foxing, age-toning, or spotting. This is a wonderful complete set of this important early English edition of The Arabian Nights / One Thousand and One Nights, particularly appealing to collectors of antiquarian literature, illustrated books, Oriental literature, and fine nineteenth-century bindings. Six volumes, octavo. Complete. A wonderful example of the first Jonathan Scott translation of the Arabian Nights, beautifully bound in half straight grain morocco by Morrell, with a frontispiece to each volume. The first edition of this work to be translated by Jonathan Scott. Two editions by Scott were issued by this publisher in 1811, and this is the more desirable larger format "post octavo, with plates by Smirke." Complete in six volumes. Beautifully bound in FULL GRAIN Morocco. 'Arabian Nights', or 'One Thousand and One Nights' is a collection of folk tales from the Middle East collected over centuries, with the roots of the tales being traced from Greek, Indian, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Jewish folklore. The tales are being told by Scheherazade to the King Shahryar, in a bid to save her life. After discovering his wife was cheating on him, he killed her, and vowed to marry a new virgin every day, and then behead them the next. He had killed one thousand and one women before marrying Scheherazade. Scheherazade entices the King by telling him a story on their first night together, pausing halfway through as the sun came up. The King, being absorbed by the story, keeps Scheherazade alive, eager to hear more from her. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. Collated, complete. The illustrations after Robert Smirke, re-engraved for this edition, are taken from a series Smirke first executed nearly a decade earlier and which first appeared in Edward Forster's translation of 1802Edited and translated by English orientalist Jonathan Scott, who made a substantial revision of Antoine Galland's translation of 1704-17, the first in a Western language. No inscriptions, no writing. Firmly bound. Pages remain bright. Very Good condition bordering on Near Fine.
