A Perennial Favorite of Collectors Fr. 225. 1896 $1 Silver Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. A perennial favorite of collectors and one that has rightly earned that distinction. The $1 Silver Certificate issued under the Series of 1896 is nothing short of a work of art even by the most objective of considerations. Anchored by a scene entitled History Instructing Youth, the context behind the framing of this scene is all the more interesting considering the view of Washington D.C. Seen from the perspective of the Lee Mansion in Arlington in a subtle reminder as to the sacrifices that have occurred throughout American history and adds a layer of solemnity to History instructing Youth about the finer points of the Constitution. In the background, the cityscape of Washington D.C. may also be observed with the Washington Monument and United States Capitol Building assuming prominent positions alongside the old Bureau of Engraving & Printing Building which currently houses offices associated with the United States Forest Service. The Library of Congress may also be observed along with a smattering of other smaller buildings that fails to adequately grasp the rapid growth faced by the city following the end of the American Civil War in 1865. Notable omissions include the White House (1800) and the Smithsonian Castle (1849) when not counting for later additions such as the Lincoln Memorial (1922) and the Jefferson Memorial (1943). Yet even the presence of Washington's distant cityscape is a testament to the skills of the engravers who languished and labored to produce the Series of 1896. These labors are indeed brought to uncommon form reflective of the grade assigned by PMG and serve to uphold this piece among the company of impressive and uncommon peers that managed to avoid extensive circulation like so many other pieces that circulated to a point where redemption should have happened.
