Fr. 268. 1896 $5 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58.

A Testament to Engraved Prowess Fr. 268. 1896 $5 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58. Representative of the Tillman - Morgan signature combination which was the first to grace this iconic design that went by the wayside with the Series of 1899. Bidders are nonetheless met with a sight to behold when looking upon this lightly handled example which has been assigned a grade of Choice About Uncirculated 58 by the likes of PMG. Running from left to right, the almost full-length vignette known as Electricity Presenting Light to the World cuts a figure where words alone fail to do justice unlike the position of this note in Bowers and Sundman's 100 Greatest American Currency Notes which lists this design in the 5th position out of 100 designs. Here the likes of Electricity cuts a dominant presence against her counterparts effectively leaving no symbolic stone unturned. Other figures such as Jupiter who can be seen aloft in his celestial chariot at left accompanies the likes of Fame and Peace who collectively lend ample context to the overall composition leaving little to the imagination about the importance and inherent mystique of electrical power during the late 1890s. Perhaps most important though is the grade assigned. The inherent attributes of this grade level do well to showcase a level of color and detail that evokes the very day this note was delivered to its destination bank while allowing it to stand above the vast overwhelming majority of its technically circulated peers. Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000. Provenance: From the American Legacy Collection. Click here for certification details from PMG.
