An Exceptional Series of 1890 $5 Treasury Note Reflective of a Rare Grade Level Fr. 361. 1890 $5 Treasury Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Representative of a series imprint that found little love at the Treasury Department during the early 1890s. This Gem Uncirculated $5 Treasury Note representative of the Rosecrans - Nebeker signature combination is a fine testament to their apparent bureaucratical disfavor when looks to the back design. Here interlocking masses of floral and geometric detail reign supreme consigning unengraved space solely to the fringes of the margins while no less than eight counters are noticed. The largest of these is represented by the word "FIVE" which sits at center atop a bed of lathework while a pair of smaller counters are seen at left and right as the centerpieces of two large geometric elements, but this alone is only part of the design and speaks solely to what drew the ire of the Treasury department. By contrast, the face design offers testament to the one part of the design that went unchanged through the late 1890s when Treasury Notes were finally retired. Here the portrait of George H. Thomas offers a fine engraved reproduction of Thomas's gruff countenance and comes framed by the implements of martial prowess that speak to his service during the American Civil War on the battlefields of Tennessee and Georgia. To that end, one may further notice a scalloped Treasury seal and masses of complex floral detail that collectively serve to connect various design elements such as counters and panels including the rightmost serial number panel seen at right in the top margin above "AMERICA." Now held together, it takes little see that this is nothing short of an attractive design and one that does well to exemplify the Series of 1890 as this example affords the condition-focused collector the chance to marvel and contest a veritable engraved masterwork that captures the haughtiness of period engraving standards. Estimate: $12,500 - $17,500. Click here for certification details from PMG.
