Lot military/Napoleonic context 1/ Magnificent Napoleonic engraving representing the battle and the Passage of Tagliamento delivered on 26 Ventôse Year 5 The battle called the Passage of Tagliamento or the Battle of Valvasone is a battle of the first Italian campaign fought on 16 March 1797 in Friuli, opposite Valvasone. This battle pits the French troops of the Army of Italy commanded by Bonaparte and reinforced by the Bernadotte division freshly arrived from Alsace, against those of the Austrian Empire under the orders of Archduke Charles. Engraving dimensions: 48 x 32 cm Frame dimensions: 52 x 35 cm Drawn by Carle Vernet, finished by J.P Simon and etched by Duplessis-Bertaux Dating: 1821-1850 (period engraving) Sold with frame and glass Antoine Charles Horace Vernet, called Carle Vernet, born in Bordeaux on 14 August 1758 and died in Paris on 27 November 1836, is a painter, draftsman and caricaturist, French goguettier and lithographer who produced numerous engravings and battle paintings from the Napoleonic era 2/ Superb handwritten document of a correspondence written to a General during the First Empire by the very first Judge of a Court of Justice appointed under the Empire named "Deville" Deville writes to this General and bids him farewell as to others such as General de Laborde Historical notes: A Deville is mentioned, the first judge of a court of justice under the Empire, in affairs linking memories of the royalist Quiberon expedition (1795) and intrigues or treaties of the year 1809 (related to the economic war or Austrian authorities). Furthermore, for 1809 and maritime history, Brittany and the Atlantic coasts suffer the British blockade (as in the Battle of Les Sables-d’Olonne or the affair of fireships at Île d’Aix) "My dear General, I have duly received the letter you honored me with on October 14 at the Bay of Quiberon and since then I have not had a single opportunity to write to you. I take advantage of the occasion of the little Le Cerne that I am forced to send back to France so as not to see him butchered, to give you news of myself. I learned with the greatest pleasure of your happy arrival in France; I am penetrated by all you tell me — of obliging and friendly in your estimable letter, I sincerely repay you in kind, oh! may God grant that we live in times more happy, which would enable me to show you all my gratitude for the words of friendship you have shown us all; we often speak of you in our ordinary society which has not grown since your departure, and which is much sadder since you left us. I give you many thanks for the kindness you showed in sending my packages to Mr. Guillot; I hope that circumstances did not prevent you from seeing him, you will have found in him a brave and worthy friend. If you have the opportunity to see or write to General de Laborde, please remind him of my remembrance, and if you see the amiable friend Crofi, please tell him many kind regards from me. The brave and respectable Mr. De Carvalho as well as Madame and the rest of the family, not forgetting little Marianne and the chancellor with a more sensitive memory of you and sending you a thousand and thousand wishes, our existence since your departure has become very sad and seems to become more so. Farewell, my dear General, be happy, if it is possible to be so in the madness of the century in which we live and deign to accept the estimable expression of my highest esteem and of all my consideration. Quiberon, 13 February 1809 Signed Deville Infos: Comte Amédée-David de Pastoret (with a slight misspelling on the name "Patoret"). Amédée-David de Pastoret (1791–1857), marquis then count of Pastoret, was a French politician, senior civil servant, and man of letters. Political career: He served as State Counselor under the Restoration and was named senator under the Second Empire. Artistic notoriety: He is today particularly famous for his portrait painted in 1826 by the renowned painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. This masterpiece, entitled The Count Amédée-David de Pastoret, is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago. Close to the painter, he commissioned several of his works. Infos: The title of “colonel de Solirène” generally refers to the Chevalier de Solirène (1765-1847). Military and official positions: He was colonel of staff of the National Guard of Paris and also held the prestigious role of Gentleman of the King’s Chamber to Charles X. Art collector: He was a great art lover and a recognized noble collector of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His collection included works by masters. For example, the famous painting "Head of an old woman with a veil" (attributed to the circle of Denijs Calvaert), now housed at the Louvre, was part of his personal collection and passed through several public sales held under his name in Paris (notably in 1812, 1829 and 1843).
