Francesco Selmi - Ptomaine od Alcaloidi Cadaverici...

A rare, foundational work for the history of criminology and poisoning crimes. A unmissable piece for enthusiasts of historical criminology and the history of great 19th-century judicial cases. The volume tackles one of the era's most subtle and feared crimes: murder by poisoning (veneficium). Prof. Francesco Selmi, renowned discoverer of ptomaine (cadaveric alkaloids), revolutionized criminal investigations by offering judges, investigators, and experts the decisive tool to unmask false poisonings caused by the natural decomposition of bodies and to avoid spectacular miscarriages of justice. This book represents a milestone in the birth of scientific investigation and forensic criminology applied to the darkest crimes. Historical and Judicial Context In the second half of the 19th century, trials for poisoning obsessively captured the attention of public opinion and the press. Before this discovery, a decomposing body could mislead judges, leading to the condemnation of innocents or the acquittal of real killers. Selmi's work marked the end of suspicions based on mere suppositions, introducing incontrovertible scientific evidence into the courts and forever changing the face of criminal investigations of the era. It was a limited edition, reserved for luminaries, magistrates, and sector experts. The surviving copies are today extremely rare and difficult to find on the antique book market. It is a priceless relic for collectors of criminology, the history of criminal justice, and old criminal trials.
