Francis Bacon (1909–1992) Studies of the Human Body (Sabatier 34) Color lithograph, after the central panel of Francis Bacon's triptych 'Studies of the Human Body' (1979). Printed on handmade Privilege Cotton paper. Numbered 32/250 in pencil on the front. Bearing the blind stamp of The Shakespeare Arts. Dimensions: 50 × 65 cm. With a certificate of authenticity. Description: This lithograph is based on the central panel of Francis Bacon's triptych Studies of the Human Body from 1979, a signature work from the artist's late figurative period. The composition shows a distorted, fragmented nude, stretched out on a sky-blue oval table. The figure is set against a flat black plane, within a soft salmon-pink interior. At the bottom of the table hangs a crumpled sheet of printed paper over the edge, a motif that recurs in Bacon's work from this period and relates to his use of printed matter and photographic source material. The body is depicted with Bacon's characteristic distortions: the limbs bend into unnatural shapes and the face is reduced to a highly distorted, grimacing form. The contrast between the almost decorative color palette and the unsettling anatomy is characteristic of Bacon's approach to the human body. This stone-signed lithograph bears the signature as part of the printing process. The present copy is hand-numbered 32/250, printed on handmade Privilege Cotton paper and bearing the blind stamp of The Shakespeare Arts. The work is supplied with a certificate of authenticity. Condition: Good. Normal signs of storage and transport. The image area itself is undamaged.
