This spectacular original exhibition poster from 1972 was created for the great Francis Bacon retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris, an institution known for hosting only the most celebrated figures in modern art. Bacon, whose raw intensity and uncompromising vision redefined 20th-century figurative painting, was the second living artist, after Picasso, to receive such an honor. The poster features Bacon's haunting and visceral painting La Corrida, rendered in his unmistakable visual language of distorted bodies, existential struggle, and psychological intensity. The image captures a moment of violent tension in an ambiguous setting, where energy, flesh, and abstraction swirl together, all with Bacon's characteristic use of rich color fields, in this case a scorching burnt orange.
