Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664), Workshop of - Santa Faz
1. Technical sheet Author: Workshop / circle of Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) School: Sevillian School, Spanish Baroque Period: 17th century, probably second quarter / mid-17th century Title: Santa Fáce or Veronica’s Veil – Christ crowned with thorns Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 45 × 36 cm Support: Canvas on wooden stretcher Signature: Not visible Attribution: Workshop / circle of Francisco de Zurbarán, based on iconographic, compositional, and stylistic affinities with the different versions of Santa Faz developed by Zurbarán and his workshop Condition: Condition of conservation appropriate to the piece’s age, with craquelure, surface wear, and small alterations typical of an old painting. The reverse and the frame show signs of age and historical interventions. 2. Description and iconography Important devotional painting from the Sevillian school of the 17th century, related to the artistic circle of Francisco de Zurbarán, representing the Santa Faz or Veronica’s Veil. The composition shows the face of Christ crowned with thorns, intensely individualised, against a broad white field that reproduces the miraculous veil on which, according to Christian tradition, his image was imprinted during the Path to Calvary. The head is slightly turned and elevated, with gaze directed upward. The slightly parted mouth, the deep shadows surrounding the eyes, and the blood drops from the crown emphasize physical suffering without resorting to theatrical expression. The white veil occupies almost the entire composition and is surrounded by a wide dark background. Its upper edges form soft converging folds toward the center, creating the illusion of a real fabric suspended before the viewer. We are, therefore, before an image conceived essentially for private devotion and contemplation of the Passion, not as a narrative episode. The iconography answers to the tradition of vera icon: the “true image” of Christ allegedly miraculously imprinted on the veil given by Veronica during the Way of the Cross. The Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts stresses precisely that this was one of Zurbarán’s favourite themes, repeated at different points in his career. 3. Relationship with Francisco de Zurbarán and his workshop The connection with Zurbarán is particularly interesting because it is not based solely on a general resemblance to Spanish religious painting. Zurbarán developed a true iconographic family of Santa Fazes. Christie’s notes that there are about a dozen autograph versions accepted, in addition to workshop replicas and numerous later copies. The oldest signed and dated version known dates to 1631, while another secure version is dated 1658. The existence of an active workshop is also well documented. The Prado Museum recalls that Zurbarán worked from Seville with a large workshop, necessary to respond to numerous commissions for both Andalusia and the American market, and that in different religious cycles the participation of assistants can be observed. Prado itself preserves works catalogued today as “Workshop Copy of Francisco de Zurbarán,” demonstrating that the category of workshop production is fully recognized in the Zurbarán corpus. In this painting we find several elements particularly close to the language generated in that environment: - the absolute isolation of the sacred image; - the violent contrast between white and black; the reduction of all narrative information; the intensely devotional treatment of Christ; the monumentalization of a head represented in a relatively small format; and, above all, the recurso of the clear veil set against a black background. All of them belong to the visual universe of Zurbarán’s Santa Fazes. 4. Concrete comparisons The fundamental reference should be Santa Faz, c. 1660, from the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts. In it Zurbarán represents the white veil suspended against an absolutely black background. The museum highlights the contrast between the brownish tones of Christ’s head and the intense white of the cloth, as well as the function of the painting as a device to evoke compassion and contemplation. Our painting shares precisely that essential chromatic organization: black background → white veil → brownish, bloodied face of Christ. Another important comparison is Veronica’s Veil from the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation, Houston, a Zurbarán work from the 1630s, also oil on canvas. The museum confirms that it measures 107.3 × 79.4 cm and belongs to the earliest known stage of his representations of the theme. In those early versions, the essential device is to depict the veil with a strong degree of realism while Christ’s image takes on a less physical quality, almost arising from the cloth. Here lies precisely the main difference of our piece. In the work we study, Christ possesses much greater corporeality. The face is modeled with chiaroscuro, with a nose, cheekbones, lips, and eyes built tridimensionally, and the crown of thorns is physically visible. In Zurbarán’s best originals, the face tends to appear much more ethereal, almost like a miraculous imprint on the canvas. Specialized bibliography also notes features of Zurbarán such as the three-quarter view, the diffuse character of the effigy, and the extraordinary realism given to the veil itself. This difference is precisely one of the arguments why I would not catalogue this painting as autograph Francisco de Zurbarán. But it does not eliminate the relationship with his circle. Within a workshop, a prototype could be reinterpreted to give greater material presence to Christ and make the iconography more immediately understandable for popular devotion. There is, in fact, a precedent of enormous importance: Christie’s sold in 2004 a Saint Veronica’s Veil catalogued explicitly as “Studio of Francisco de Zurbarán,” from the High Museum of Art and formerly from Wildenstein. It measured 104.1 × 74.3 cm and had been included in various historical studies on Zurbarán and his workshop. Therefore, the production of workshop versions of this iconography is documented; it is not a hypothesis invented for this cataloging. 5. Stylistic and psychological analysis One of the painting’s strengths is Christ’s head. The artist builds the face through a very concentrated chiaroscuro. The left half is almost swallowed by shadow, while a narrow light travels across the forehead, nose, right cheek, and neck. The device yields a figure of notable volume despite the small format. The eyes are the true expressive centre. They do not look directly at the viewer. Both gaze slightly upward, producing an expression of restrained pain, fatigue, and acceptance, closer to spiritual meditation than to a narrative depiction of violence. The mouth is slightly open, a very effective device because it suggests breathing and physical suffering. The crown is resolved with quick, dark, pointed brushstrokes. It is not meticulously described: it functions as an irregular black mass with thorns protruding. The drops of blood constitute almost the only strong chromatic accents. On the light forehead they have immediate visual impact. The relationship between figure and support is also particularly interesting. The edge of the veil does not merely function as background. The painter deliberately differentiates two levels of reality: the white veil that seems physically present and the image of Christ that appears to emerge upon it. That play between real object and sacred image is precisely one of the essential aspects of Zurbarán’s Santa Faz production, traditionally described as true “divine trompe l’oeil.” The Bilbao Museum also emphasises the illusionistic character of the veil within these compositions. 6. Historical context, dating, and attribution The work can reasonably be placed within the Sevillian School of the 17th century. If the relationship with the Zurbarán workshop is accepted, a chronology roughly between 1630 and 1660 would be coherent with both the iconography’s development and the workshop’s activity. Zurbarán was already developing versions of the theme at the beginning of the 1630s. The version preserved in Houston is dated to the 1630s; the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts version is around 1660. There is also a very interesting European parallel. Domenico Fetti had painted around 1618–1622 his famous Veil of Veronica, now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. There we also find the crowned head of thorns, blood on the forehead, the white veil, and a black background. The NGA explains that the painting was conceived precisely as an image intended to provoke intense contemplation of Christ’s suffering. The bibliography dedicated to Zurbarán’s Veronica’s compares his compositions with Fetti’s version, demonstrating that our painting belongs to a very specific international iconographic tradition of the first half of the 17th century. Therefore, my cataloging formulation would be: Taller / entorno de Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) Sevillian School, 17th century Santa Faz or Veronica’s Veil – Christ crowned with thorns The attribution is based on the iconographic and stylistic relation with the different Santa Faz versions made by Zurbarán and his workshop, although there is currently no certificate, documented provenience, or technical study allowing it to be considered autograph or formally incorporated into the workshop’s catalog. This last sentence is important: it makes the cataloging much more defensible. 7. Shipping and conditions The work will be shipped by a specialized professional company, using a custom-made box and foam protections, to ensure maximum safety during transport. We ship internationally worldwide. Shipments outside the European Union, to certain international destinations, or those requiring special procedures may incur additional transport, packing, customs clearance, or import costs, which will be borne by the buyer. If a frame is included, it will be considered a complementary gift and will not be subject to complaint.
