Francisco Rodríguez Sanclement (1893–1968) Atribuido - Scène de tauromachie

Interesting painting attributed to Francisco Rodríguez Sánchez-Clement, known artistically as Francisco Rodríguez Sanclement (Elche, 1893 – Santa Pola, 1968), a notable representative of Spanish figurative and genre painting of the 20th century. The work depicts an intense bullfighting scene, starring a black bull and several toreros who intervene in a dramatic episode in the arena, apparently a goring and the aid to the participants. The composition stands out for its extraordinary dynamism, built with broad, rapid and expressive brushstrokes that convey the agitation and movement of the characters. The muletas and capes, resolved through intense yellows, blues and reds, contrast with the dark tones of the bull and the shadows projected on the sand. The artist renounces academic meticulousness to focus on the action, using chromatic blotches and energetic strokes that bring spontaneity and vitality to the scene. Style, influences and artistic context The painting relates to Spanish costumbrismo with Impressionist and luminist influence, one of the main strands of Francisco Rodríguez Sanclement’s artistic production. His pictorial language is characterized by freedom of brushwork, interest in light effects and the depiction of popular scenes, especially those linked to Andalusian folklore, flamenco and bullfighting. These characteristics reflect the influence of Spanish painting from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially Joaquín Sorolla, whose luminous and spontaneous treatment has historically been linked to Sanclement’s work. The present composition connects directly with the tradition of Spanish bullfighting painting, developed since Francisco de Goya and renewed later through more impressionistic and expressive languages. About Francisco Rodríguez Sanclement (1893–1968) Francisco Rodríguez Sánchez-Clement was born in Elche, Alicante, on April 9, 1893, and died in Santa Pola on June 5, 1968. Son of the painter Francisco Rodríguez Clement, he began his artistic training at a young age and later studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he received instruction from renowned masters such as Cecilio Pla, Antonio Muñoz Degrain and José Garnelo. During his training he frequented the Prado Museum, where he studied and copied works of the great Spanish masters, showing particular interest in Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Zurbarán. In 1914 he earned the title of drawing professor and was distinguished for his knowledge of color and composition. His career was linked to important national competitions and exhibitions. He participated in various editions of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts and carried out notable artistic activity in Madrid, where he exhibited at the Circle of Fine Arts and participated in the Autumn Salon. Upon returning to Elche, he served as director of the Municipal School of Drawing and Painting, contributing to the training of new generations of artists. In 1944 he received the honor prize of the Provincial Exhibition of Fine Arts. He also carried out significant exhibition activity in Valencia and received international recognitions, including a second medal from the Portuguese Society of Fine Arts. His painting achieved diffusion beyond Spain and in France he was known by the nickname “Le petit Sorolla,” due to the similarities of his free brushwork and luminous treatment with the work of the Valencian master. His production encompassed numerous genres, including portrait, landscape, seascapes, female nudes, Flemish scenes, religious subjects and bullfighting compositions. Precisely, this last theme constitutes one of the most interesting links between the presented work and the known artistic repertoire of Rodríguez Sanclement. In 1984, years after his death, a homage was dedicated to him in the Sorolla Room of Elche, in recognition of his career and his contribution to 20th-century Spanish painting.
