Frank A. Seiberling - Goodyear "#1 in Tires". - 1960s

Antique enameled advertising sign from the 1960s for the Goodyear brand. In good condition with small scratches; it’s vintage, designed with the classic logo and the era’s commercial slogan. Features embossed/screen-printed text with the classic Goodyear logo accompanied by the slogan "#1 in Tires". The edges are finished in tubular tab form, indicating that it functioned as a sliding placard, a modular panel for price boards, shelves, or an interchangeable mechanic shop sign. Shows evident signs of age, patina, and wear with the presence of surface rust, which denotes real use in an automotive or workshop setting. Creator of the original symbol (Wingfoot / Winged Foot) Concept designer: Frank A. Seiberling (co-founder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company). History: In 1900, Seiberling suggested using Mercury’s Winged Foot (the Roman god of commerce and travel, known for speed). He based it on a bronze statue of Mercury that he kept in the foyer of his own home. The management team approved placing the winged sandal right in the center of the word Goodyear. 2. Modern redesign and slogan ("#1 in Tires") Graphic redesign (1968): The exact graphic version seen on this plaque—with the italic, compact typography and the bold color palette of bright yellow on navy blue—was developed in 1968 by the brand’s internal corporate design team and its advertising agency to unify Goodyear’s international image in racing (NASCAR, F1) and shops. Slogan "#1 in Tires": The scripted/brush-stroke slogan ("#1 in Tires") is part of the large advertising campaign introduced in the late 1960s and consolidated in the 1970s and 1980s by the firm’s advertising agencies (such as Young & Rubicam), used worldwide on signs and sheet-metal supports for store displays and repair-shop signs. Dimensions: 40.5 centimeters by 23 centimeters.
