Splendid philatelic and historical set of four registered letters sent from Conakry (Guinea) to Paris (addressed to Mr. Gérard Wolf, Rue Lafayette), covering the pivotal period of the proclamation of independence and the first issues of the young Republic. Additionally, five blocks of eight mint stamps with margins (2x4 format), issued by the Republic of Guinea to commemorate the proclamation of its independence on October 2, 1958 (printed by the renowned London firm Thomas De La Rue & Co. Ltd.). Detailed description of the lot: Letter 1 (16-5-1959): Postage with the commemorative stamps of the Proclamation of Independence of October 2, 1958 (denominations 65F and 100F). Registered label Conakry R 134. On the back, a magnificent official violet ink stamp from the Secretariat of State for Posts and Telecommunications – The Head of the Postal Group of Guinea, with arrival stamp Paris Distribution dated May 16, 1959. Letter 2 (10-4-1959): Rich mixed postage with Independence-type stamps (denominations 10F and several 100F). Label Conakry R 322, air mail mention PAR AVION, dispatch stamp Conakry Direction dated April 8, 1959 and arrival stamp in Paris dated April 10, 1959. Letter 3 (16-5-1959): Combined postage of 50F and 100F. Cancellations from Conakry on May 5, 1959 and arrival stamp Paris Distribution on the back dated May 16, 1959. Letter 4 (25-7-1960): Superb philatelic composition featuring UPU issues (May 6, 1959–1960) in stepped denominations (10F, 15F, 20F, 25F, 50F). Registered label Conakry R 141, cancellations July 22, 1960 and Paris arrival stamp dated July 25, 1960. Condition: A homogeneous set in an attractive period patina, retaining all postal routing marks, registered labels and back arrival stamps. A top-tier study and postal history piece on French West Africa (A.O.F.) and Guinea’s institutional transition. Technical and historical interest: The transition cancellations (Conakry Direction marks, Paris Distribution stamps) and the stamps issued at the very start of Guinea's independence (such as the 1959 independence series or the 1959-1960 UPU issues) are direct witnesses to the establishment of the country’s sovereign postal administration. These pieces consist of blocks of eight mint stamps with margins (2x4 format), issued by the Republic of Guinea to commemorate the proclamation of its independence on October 2, 1958 (printed by the famous London firm Thomas De La Rue & Co. Ltd.). The main visual of each stamp depicts the portrait of President Ahmed Sékou Touré accompanied by a dove of peace holding an olive branch. The lot covers several face values and colors of the series: - 5F (brown) - 10F (blue) - 20F (red) - 50F (brown-orange) - 65F (green) - 100F (mauve/violet) The paper features an intact gum on the reverse, with the original printing sheets margins bearing the printer’s typographic and technical marks, as well as a fine transparency of the print visible from the back under press exposure.
